I still prefer AA to proprietary lithium batteries

When I decided to get a digital camera for everyday use, I did not even hesitate to consider a slim, lithium-powered product, cos, I prefer to use those widely available AAs.

Reason number 1: Lithium batteries are built into special shapes and sizes, they cater mainly for that specific product you buy, so, IF you can hang on to the camera for more than 3 years, chances are you will not get to use the camera anymore due to deteriorating power storage.

....AAs are available in NiMH rechargeables, alkalines where you can purchase at any convenient store.

Reason number 2: If you happen to travel and need the camera for more than 200 snaps, you'll need to bring an extra lithium pack, which is gonna cost you about 1/4 of the camera's price (based on an entry level DC). Oh yes, if you have only one battery pack, don't even buy any memory card bigger than 2Gb, you won't have enough power to snap that many shots, after all.

..AA rechargeables are available at a lower cost, so you can have more sets of the batteries on hand, and you can even charge another set at home, while you go shooting out there...some lithium batteries could only be charged inside the camera (otherwise you pay extra for another charger, yikes)

Reason number 3: Cameras have been known to malfunction in extremely low temperature due to power issues.

...My experience with one particular brand (Uniross Hybrio) was that, these AA rechargeables can still power up the DC at temperatures as low as -6Celcius.

Statistics for consideration:
a.You require about 0.3 sen (Malaysian power rates) to charge up a set of 2 AA rechargeables. Good NiMH makes can last you up to 10 years of service or 1000 charges They cost RM10 a piece when new.

b. set of 2 AA rechargeables(cost RM20) can last you up to 150 snaps (without flash), while lithium packs(cost RM80 - 150) about 250 snaps (without flash).

c. NiMH rechargeables last longer if you drain them dry before putting them on charge again, BUT you can't do the same to Lithiums. Li-ions will only fare better if you charge them every now and then.
