I have found the most intuitive and customiseable launcher for my android phone.
It is the SSlauncher. It allows unlimited ways to place your icons and apps. You could place shortcuts within shortcuts and save on battery power, because shortcuts lying on your homescreen actually consumes a lot of power standing by.
By embedding shortcuts within shortcuts, the apps do not run in the background at all, while at the same time, you can assign your own customised icons or images to depict the shortcuts. If you know how to generate background-free pngs, you can use pictures of people or images with irregular shapes to beautify your screen.
Every single picture you put on the screen can be clickable, custom linked by your own preference. Besides using icons, you can also assign information like battery state/ wifi state/ unread mail/ missed calls count/ data traffic/ date and time/ to the icons, again alignable to anywhere, sizeable to any font or size, colour etc. You can even customise the transparency level of the colours or icons, rearrange the order of icons from front to back as you would like to. Now, try to beat that with any other launcher.
You will quickly get fed up with those rigid grid-formats found in every other launcher.
